LifeSource Salem Mountain Bike Short Track Series Starts Tonight!

LifeSource MTB Short Track Series, Salem, OR from nwduffer on Vimeo.

My buddy Brock and I hopped on down to the State Fairgrounds to meet up with Jeff McNamee, Matt Haughey, Kenji Sugahara. The three of them, along with Pacific Pedaling team member, Pat Kudszus spent the evening pre-riding the course, and determining the final layout.

Having never been to a short track event, we took a few moments to ask Jeff and Kenji about the upcoming race series. Jeff helped lead the way on the Willamette Valley Cyclocross series last fall in the area, and it’s great to see another event added this year. Even if you are a beginner and have never raced before, this would be a great event to make your first!

Come down to the State Fairgrounds tonight and support local cycling and racing events! For more information about the series, be sure to visit their site.

Pat’s Race Report from Bear Springs Trap

Ellen Miller going fast on the short track event at Bear Springs.
Ellen Miller going fast on the short track event at Bear Springs.

Blog Note: Today’s race report from the Bear Springs Trap Cross Country and Short Track is brought to you by fellow PacificPedaling team member, and wise philosopher, Pat Kudszus. This is a long report he sent in via email…click the more link for the whole article.

We tried getting out of town by 9am. As you know Ellen and I are ALWAYS late except for Bike races. The last stop before I-5 was KING Donuts on State St. Hmmm. I love Donuts.

The Roads were good to us and the Ghetto Music hook-up also worked flawlessly. What I mean by that is running one of those goofy cassette tape things with an ipod but you also need to keep the thing charging while your driving so that’s the extra ghetto part. I know, Shoulda took pics of the wires all over the car but both, Yes, Both camera batteries were dead.

So, we roll Thru Government Camp on our way to the venue and SkiBowl is Covered in Snow. Not really what you want to see when your still heading up the mountain and you’ve got another 30 min. to go…..

PacificPedaling.com Team at Hornings Hustle and another “W!”

hustle

I wasn’t sure the weekend could get much better after a fantastic ride on Saturday, and then a monster tapas bash at Casa De Pez that night, but turns out it DID get better. I had hoped a day of decent miles and a night of birthday partying wouldn’t slow down team members that were hitting the Horning’s Hustle, and thankfully, it didn’t…in fact, tapas may be a secret weapon!

Pat wrapped up a #4 finish in Cat 1 Mens…even though I heard a rumor he wasn’t going to race. I’m slowly finding out with Pat that he can’t say no when it comes time to toe the line! In Women’s Cat 2, Ellen brought home ANOTHER 1st place spot! That’s two for two! What a great start to the season!

I’m so proud of our PacificPedaling.com racers….great job guys!

Beautiful Weekend for a Birthday Ride

bdayride1
40 for 40 Birthday Ride with PacificPedaling.com team members, Paul Lopez, Darrell Trussell (honorary member for the day,) Ellen Miller, James Cloyd and Pat Kudszus. Photo at the halfway stopping point, The Banker's Cup, in St. Paul. Photo - Nick Lopez.

Last week I turned 40. I had told some friends that I wanted to go out and log a mile for each year that I’d been alive and planned a quick little mild 40 miles out to St. Paul and back. Darrell, Ellen, James and Pat all came along on what turned out to be a beautiful ride on a beautiful day. It started out a little chilly, but warmed up decently by the end of the ride. I could really ramble on about how great of a day it was, but let me just bullet point some highlights:

  • At one corner on Windsor Island we met a truck coming down a farm road and we clearly had the right of way, but he sped up to get out on the road in front of us, cutting us off, and James gave him a friendly wave….just to say “hi” as James like to say. The farmer fella didn’t appreciate it, and flew us the bird as he sped off. I kept my eyes open the rest of the 40 miles for that black pickup.
  • Speaking of James, I was proud of him getting out and slicing off 40 so quickly after his surgery. Way to gut it out.
  • Speaking of gutting it out, my buddy Darrell is on the newer side of cycling, and was riding his mid 80’s KHS steel frame bike weighing in at 40-45 pounds by our best guess. He also rode without water and in tennis shoes on his flat pedals…and kept up with the group. Nice job Big D!
  • Pat pulling away when the topic of Halloween came up again. Classic.
  • Being chased by the paparazzi and a nice tailwind on the way home.

Seriously, I couldn’t imagine a better day to get out and celebrate on the bike. Thanks guys for coming out to celebrate with me! Here are a few more quick shots from Nick of the ride back.

Paul and James, waving .....yeah, that's probably what his wave was like to the black truck too. Maybe it was the big grin that got the farmer worked up 🙂
