My wife is a recreational rider of bikes…and frankly, truth be told, that’s really what I amount to as well. But I recreate just a little more than she does. I bought a little flat-bar Jamis for her last year and she’s enjoyed some 10-12 mile rides with me at a casual pace, and frankly those are very enjoyable rides for me as well. Not everything has to be about maxing out what little ability I have on two wheels, so just crusing along at 10 or 12 miles an hour, for an hour, is a nice change of pace.
Turns out, those 10-12 mile rides are also best if there’s a destination involved. Fortunately, we live in a great spot where we can be out on a country road for a good portion of the ride, and then end up at a local coffee shop, or just head downtown and hit one of several places to enjoy a beverage or snack before heading back home.
Last fall we took a leisurley stroll downtown just as it was starting to get dark. It rained lightly on us before the ride was over, and we almost got hit by a lady in a Mustang on the way home. Turns out, that was my wife’s favorite ride of last year. So, the other night it was no surprise when she asked if we could do that same ride again. And as was the case last year, we got rained on and had our fair share of night drivers making us a tad nervous. When we got home I wasn’t sure she’d ever want to venture out again at night, especially in the rain, but she once again said it was her favorite kind of ride.
A little rain isn’t too bad when you’ve got hot coffee, tea, and mixed berry pie waiting for you at the destination!
