For anyone who’s read this blog for any length of time, you know I’ve had a battle with the bulge for some time. In 2007 I successfully took down 50 lbs in a serious effort to eat better and take in more exercise. It was during that time that I developed my love for cycling as it was the only form of exercise I could really get into…and it all took off from there. Last year, I got a little lazy, especially towards the end of the year, and put back on 10-12 of those pounds, and just cruised through the holidays. Sadly, during this last part of the journey, I haven’t put up as much of a fight as I should have, or as I wished I had. Well, I’m happy to say, I’m back, and now with a vengeance!
Last weeks off-road ride with Tyler really sparked something for me. I ran out of juice almost immediately after hitting the trails, and just felt like a big blog on the bike. Riding out in the rain and snow was an amazing moment in the week, but not being able to fully enjoy it because I’ve been sliding backwards in my efforts, was not so cool. At that point, I decided it was *really* time to get serious. I mean, I’ve been saying what I want to do…but it’s time to get on it.
In the past 7-8 days, I’ve dropped 6-7 lbs. I know how to do this, and I know how to do it the right way. I just get lazy. When I eat properly, drink the water I’m supposed to be drinking, and exercise regularly…I cut weight. It’s pretty simple. Well, it’s simple to say, but it’s harder to do. I love food, and have no self control. One of my biggest issues is eating after dinner. If I let a crack in the dam happen in the evening…the floodgates will open up, and I kill all my efforts at being good during the day.
The other thing that’s been happening lately is I’ve been Reward Eating, which is never good. I get out on a big ride, and figure I’ve given myself a little room, and eat to make up for it. Sure I need to replenish, but I go beyond replenishing. So I’m keeping a tighter watch on that, and just being smarter all the way around.
I’ve also taken up running again. Actually I can’t really classify it as running…it’s more like ralking, wunning….since I’m really half running / half walking. I run as far as I can get…walk a bit, then start in again and repeat. Sometimes the run part isn’t really that far, but at least my heart rate is up quickly, and I’m feeling the burn. This HAS to be good cross training and good for getting my endurance up. I actually think that running is one of the quickest ways I can work on building some endurance, so I don’t peter out so fast on the trail rides. Running, for me, sucks. There’s not really a part of it I like, even though all my runner buddies keep saying, “just wait till you hit your runner’s high,” — I haven’t ever felt that. But I’m going to try to keep it in my agenda 2-3 times a week to help with training.
Lastly, I think we may actually be getting close to finalizing a kit design….I’d love to actually have a kit by racing season! That being said, I’d like to be able to wear the team kit and not change the shape of the patterns too much by the natural contours of my gutteral area. Again, more motivation to get on the stick here.
So, there it is..my public decry that I’m back! You can all hold me to it!
