Seriously, What Happened To Windsor Island Road?

This is never a good sign (no pun intended) to see.

This is never a good sign (no pun intended) to see.

Ok, at the risk of sounding like I’m just complaining about pavement everytime I see it…what in the world is going on with Windsor Island Road? One of the best things about living in Salem/Keizer, and particularly in Keizer, is that I can wheel out my front door, and within minutes, be out wheeling through farmland. I saw these construction signs when we got back from our trip and decided to avoid my favorite route out Windsor for a few days until they wrapped stuff up. But on Saturday, I finally ventured out during our early morning ride.

I actually was a little excited. The road hasn’t been horrible, — some potholes and cracks in the road — but if the pavers had been out for a couple of weeks, maybe we’d have something amazing to ride on…some new super smooth winding path through the back country of North Keizer. However, smooth was not what we were about to find.

Note the photo below, it’s the side of the road.  You can see here the gravel they dumped down before paving. You would think this is the beginning of a job well done:

Now, take another look. The bottom left side actually is darker. That’s because that’s where the paved part of the road meets the gravel…you’d think that would be the overspray, right. That’s where whatever they put down over the gravel spilled over into the loose gravel and just looked a little rough, right? Not so much…that’s actually the edge of the road…and here’s a close up of the middle of the road for you to gander at.

Click on the picture for the full sized if you’d like, and see the gravel that is now the surface of my most ridden road.  And, that’s the WHOLE road. From Chemawa up to Wheatland, all 7 miles….and it’s rough. I realize that many people get the pleasure of riding on this type of surface on a regular basis, and much of River Road from Brooks into Keizer is similar to this, but Windsor has been a pleasant road to ride until now.

Now that I’ve ranted on, I should say that I can’t confirm that the pavers are completely finished. I can only assume they are, since they’ve covered so much ground already, but I haven’t talked to anyone official yet, so that’s still just my assumption. If something changes, I’ll let you know. If you have any info, you let me know. Meanwhile, I may be skipping Windsor Island Road for a while.

Anyone who says Marion Co / Salem is bike friendly is insane and what they did to Windsor Island is testimony to that.
